LS1-2 From Molecules to Organisms: Structures and Processes

Discussion Questions

1. Are you aware of all the information that your brain takes in?

2. Have you ever heard of “illusions?” Why do you think your brain can be “tricked” like this? (Constructing two-point discrimination threshold probes)

Vocabulary

1. Illusion - an image, sound, or other sensory experience that can mislead our perception of it

2. Stimulus - information or changes in the environment that can be detected by an organism’s sense organs

3. Perception - the process of determining the identity or meaning of information from the senses

4. Sensation - the process of detecting a stimulus through the sense organs

5. Cortex - the wrinkled outer layer of the cerebrum of the brain of humans and many other animals

6. Lobe - a division of the brain that is related to different functions

Review

1. Perceptions involves processing information from the senses so that an organism can become aware of and interpret stimuli

2. Sensation and perception are related, but different; perception relies on sensation

3. The brain has different regions
