Understand the structure and function of neurons

Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) Alignment

LS1-2 From Molecules to Organisms: Structures and Processes

Discussion Questions

1. Do you think it is important for scientists to record their ideas and findings in drawings or graphics? Why or why not?

2. Have you heard of the phrase “structure matches function?”

3. How does the shape of the neuron help it do its job?

Vocabulary

1. Axon - a long, thin projection of a neuron that carries information away from the cell body and sends it to other neurons or cells

2. Dendrites - branched projections of a neuron that receive information

3. Soma (cell body) - the main part of a neuron that contains the nucleus

4. Synapse - a connection between two neurons, made up of a very small gap, which allows information to pass from one cell to another

Review

1. Neuroscientists like Camillo Golgi and Santiago Ramón y Cajal had differing views of how neurons are organized and how they work together to make up the brain and its functions

2. Neurons have specialized projections--axons and dendrites--which are specialized for transmitting and receiving information

3. Neurons make connections with one another through synapses
